Beer & Biotech

Dr. Jarred Heffron, Senior Scientist at Novozymes, will present an introduction and field questions about Novozymes Biologicals, a global biotech powerhouse that has origins in the Roanoke Valley going back more than 60 years.  He will discuss how Novozymes uses R&D, Pilot Scale, Production Scale, Quality Control, and Regulatory capabilities to bring microbial-based product to a wide variety markets on a global scale.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Jared Heffron is a Senior Scientist at Novozymes Biologicals in Salem, VA where he focuses on using microbiology, molecular biology, and genetics to develop microbes for use in the industrial and consumer sectors.  He has experience with using microbes in bio-agriculture, household care, animal feed, human probiotics, and regulatory issues in those areas.  Jared earned a B.S. in Biology from Hampden-Sydney College in 2004 and a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from VA Tech in 2010.  At VA Tech, he trained under Dr. David Popham and investigated pathways of endospore germination.  Jared refined his knowledge of endospores and large-scale experimental design during a 3-year post-doc with the US Army to develop countermeasures to biological weapons systems.  Jared joined Novozymes Biologicals in 2013 to use his knowledge of microbiology to help people in their everyday lives.

Beer & Biotech is an ecosystem-building series that will bring together investors, physicians, academics, inventors, startups, and state and regional leaders who are influential in the biotechnology industry. Each event in the year-long series will feature a local, regional, or national speaker and include plenty of time for networking and beverages at the host brewery.
