ChangeMakerZ is a 10-month development program for early-career (3-7 years post-grad) biotechnology and technology professionals looking to boost their career skills and network.
The 2025 program runs from August 2025 through May 2026. But don’t wait too long to apply – the program is limited to just 20 participants. The deadline to apply is April 15, 2025.
Who Should Apply?
STEM professionals in the first 3-7 years of your career. Preference is given to candidates in technology or biotechnology who are willing to attend in-person activities in the Roanoke-Blacksburg region for the duration of this program.
What is ChangeMakerZ?
Our program empowers STEM professionals like you to discover your passion, connect with industry leaders and peers, and gain cutting-edge skills to propel your career forward. But it’s not just about career advancement; it’s about finding your people, your place, and your purpose in the beautiful and thriving Roanoke-Blacksburg region.
Every month, you’ll focus on three elements to help empower your professional and personal growth:
- 1 in-person team-building session with the full cohort (this is the fun part!)
- 1 professional development workshop (we’re going to learn about ourselves)
- Ongoing 360 coaching to help you find your development path (everyone is different)
Program Highlights
- Emerging Technology Expertise: Delve into professional development tailored to your unique work. Acquire in-demand knowledge in emerging technology topics that will set you apart in your field.
- Conference Access: Expand your horizons with complimentary registrations for various events (valued at over $2,000!).
- Professional Assessments: DiSC, Strengths, and 360 assessments will help you better understand your leadership style (valued at over $2,000!).
- Networking and Relationships: Forge valuable connections that will shape your career. Connect with industry veterans and like-minded professionals for exclusive events and meetups.
- Community: Become part of a growing alumni network that meets quarterly; rub elbows with peers who are equally driven and passionate about making a difference.
Program Costs
If your current or future employer is an RBTC (Roanoke-Blacksburg Technology Council) member, program fees per young professional are $1,250. If a non-member, program fees are $1,750. Fees are payable by the employer on the young professional’s behalf.

Program Logistics
Candidates should be prepared to travel monthly to Roanoke or Blacksburg areas for program activities. Most of these activities will occur at the end of and/or following weekday business hours, with occasional weekday luncheons and weekend experiences.
What to Expect from ChangeMakerZ in 2025
Phase 1: Build Self Awareness & Discovery (August-October)
Let’s get started! ChangeMakerZ is designed to help you build better personal and professional communities, think about your communication and thinking styles, and build a stronger social network (the in-person kind!).

Phase 2: Make An Impact At Work (November-January)
Take your skills into the workplace and focus on what makes you unique while building influence among your peers and colleagues. How do you see your greater role in the region or within your industry?

- RBTC Emerging Technology Conference
- Strengths Assessment
- Demo Day/Tech the Halls
- Accounting 101 Session
- Project Management Session
- Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs Game and Tailgate
Phase 3: Leave a Legacy (February-May)
In the final phase of the program you’ll learn to leverage your role in your industry and the community, find opportunities for changemaking, and plan a purpose project that you feel passionate about.

- How to Create a Poster Session
- Media Meetup
- DEIB Session
- TechNite (Program Finale!)
