Robust STEM and biotech workforce development is critical to a healthy innovation ecosystem. RBTC has a long history of talent investment; from k-12 to Ph.D. recruitment, to nontraditional pathways like community college micro credentials and technical internships, we’ve strategically nurtured our talent pipeline in the region. As our hub continues to grow, so does the need to cultivate that pipeline with regional institutions and employers, and connect the students, trainees, and professionals moving through it to real opportunities here. That’s why we are thrilled to welcome Nicole DeFoor to the team as our new STEM Outreach Coordinator.

“Nicole has that rare ability to connect researchers with the communities they serve,” said Director of Innovation, Chip Bobbert. “She’s a formidable researcher herself, so she deeply understands our innovation ecosystem from the inside. It’s what helps make her a skilled champion for our partners and people building careers here.”

Nicole steps into the newly created STEM Outreach Coordinator role bringing with her a wealth of experience and strong relationships across the innovation ecosystem. She recently completed a Master of Science in Translational, Biology, Medicine & Health from Virginia Tech after earning a Bachelor of Science in Experimental Neuroscience from the same university. Nicole also holds an impressive and diverse research portfolio across molecular biology, neuroscience, and translational cancer research. During her graduate studies at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, she contributed to neuro-oncology research in Dr. Jennifer Munson’s lab.

In addition to her research career, Nicole was consistently committed to connecting the broader community to the scientific research happening in its midst. She developed and led STEM outreach initiatives as well as translated complex scientific concepts into engaging, accessible experiences for diverse audiences. Nicole earned the Student of the Year: Community Pillar Award during her graduate career in recognition for the success of and dedication to her work.

“I believe that scientific innovation has the greatest impact when it is connected to and understood by the communities it serves,” said Nicole. “Through my role at RBTC and RBIA, I’m excited to support RBIA’s mission by strengthening those connections and creating opportunities that make our region a destination for biotech and life sciences talent and innovation.”
